Description

Surface Memory explores the relationship between emotional distress, physical expression and the traces that painful experiences can leave behind. The work grew from Rose Marinelli’s experience of spending time in a space with a woman who self-harmed. Witnessing this aspect of another person’s life prompted a reflection on the complexity of hidden suffering and the importance of raising awareness of self-harm.

The composition is abstract, formed from elongated, irregular marks in deep reds and muted pinks that move across a textured ground of soft greens and greys. The layered streaks appear embedded in or cut into the surface, creating a tension between the underlying field and the marks that interrupt it. Variations in colour, texture and depth give the image a tactile quality, suggesting a surface that has been altered by repeated contact.

Rather than depicting self-harm literally, Marinelli uses abstraction to evoke the marks that distress can leave behind. The red and pink forms carry an emotional intensity, while their repetition suggests experiences that may recur and become part of a person’s inner landscape. The surface becomes a metaphor for the relationship between what is visible and what remains hidden — between the outward appearance of a person and the pain they may be carrying.

The work reflects on how difficult experiences can be expressed physically when emotional pain is hard to articulate or manage. Self-harm is a complex and deeply personal issue, and no single image or explanation can encompass the experiences of everyone affected by it. Through this work, Marinelli invites viewers to consider the distress that may lie beneath the surface and the importance of responding with compassion rather than judgement.

The title, Surface Memory, suggests that experiences can leave traces that persist beyond the moments in which they occur. Like marks embedded in a material, memories and emotional experiences may remain present even when their origins are not immediately apparent to others. The surface holds these traces without revealing the whole story behind them.

By choosing abstraction, Marinelli creates space for reflection rather than offering a definitive explanation. The marks can be read as signs of pain, vulnerability and endurance, while the layered composition suggests that a person’s experience is never simply defined by the visible evidence of their distress.

Surface Memory is ultimately an invitation to look more carefully at the experiences that often remain unseen. Through its textured forms and restrained yet powerful palette, the work seeks to raise awareness of self-harm and encourage a more compassionate understanding of the emotional suffering that can accompany it.
