About Rose Marinelli
Rose Marinelli is a Sydney-based new media artist and photographer with more than 30 years of experience in digital art and image-making. Working across digital painting, photography and digital composition, she creates contemporary works that explore social systems, power, memory, identity and everyday life. Her practice combines imagery, symbolism and visual narrative to create works that invite viewers to look beyond the surface. Influenced by artists including René Magritte, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh and Andy Warhol, Rose approaches each work as an opportunity to question, interpret and connect.
THE PRACTICE
My practice sits between photography, digital painting and image-making. I use digital tools much as a painter uses paint — building, removing and transforming layers until an image emerges.Photography often provides the starting point, but the finished work is rarely simply a photograph. I manipulate, combine and reconstruct imagery to create new visual relationships and meanings.I am interested in the space between what we recognise and what we question.
STUDIO PROCESS
My work begins with observation, photography and digital experimentation. I build images through layers of photography, digital painting and manipulation, allowing familiar subjects to shift into something less certain.I work intuitively, combining and reconstructing imagery until the visual relationships begin to reveal themselves. The process is as much about removing and questioning as it is about adding.
INFLUENCES
My work is influenced by the visual language of surrealism, painting, photography and popular culture. René Magritte, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh and Andy Warhol have each shaped the way I think about imagery, colour, composition and meaning.I am drawn to artists who can make the familiar feel strange — encouraging us to pause, look again and question what we think we see.
