Description
Resilience Amidst the Storm reflects a period in Rose Marinelli’s life when it seemed that everything was going wrong at once. With one difficulty following another, she felt exposed to circumstances beyond her control, with very little available to protect herself from the next setback.
The artwork depicts a solitary figure standing at the edge of the composition as a stream of knives cuts through the surrounding space. The figure appears vulnerable against the sharp, incoming forms, with little more than a makeshift means of protection. The knives suggest the relentless accumulation of problems, pressures and unexpected blows that can make life feel like a battle fought without adequate resources.
For Marinelli, the image captures the experience of trying to cope when the things that might ordinarily provide security seem absent or insufficient. There is no substantial shield, no safe place to retreat to and no clear indication of where the next threat will come from. The figure must face what is arriving with whatever strength and protection remain available.
The compressed space and directional movement of the knives heighten the sense of pressure. Their sharp outlines create a visual force that seems to push towards the figure, while the contrast between the dark silhouette and the cooler colours of the blades emphasises the imbalance between the incoming threats and the limited means of defence.
Yet the figure remains upright. This is not a triumphant image of someone overcoming every obstacle, nor does it suggest that resilience makes a person invulnerable. Instead, it acknowledges a quieter and often less visible form of endurance: continuing to stand when circumstances offer little comfort, certainty or protection.
The title, Resilience Amidst the Storm, speaks to the difference between being strong and having no choice but to keep going. Resilience does not always look like confidence or determination. Sometimes it means simply getting through another difficult day, absorbing what cannot be avoided and finding a way to continue despite feeling unprepared for what lies ahead.
Through its stark imagery and sense of relentless movement, the work gives visual form to the vulnerability of facing repeated adversity with limited resources. It recognises the exhaustion of being continually tested, while acknowledging the persistence required to remain standing.
Resilience Amidst the Storm is a reflection on endurance without guarantees — the struggle to protect oneself when protection is scarce, and the determination to keep going when life seems to leave very little room to do anything else.
