Flying eBid Flag

Description

Flying eBid Flag questions the use of public funds to develop or support an online marketplace for second-hand goods when established platforms already provide similar services.

The artwork depicts Parliament House beneath a vivid orange sky, with a white flag bearing the colourful eBid logo flying from its roof. Oversized three-dimensional eBid lettering dominates the foreground, placing a commercial identity directly in front of one of Australia’s most recognisable symbols of government.

The work was inspired by public debate surrounding the government-supported Garage Sale Trail initiative, which encouraged people to buy and sell pre-loved goods as part of a broader effort to promote reuse and reduce waste. While the environmental aim of extending the life of household goods has merit, the initiative raised a question for Rose Marinelli: was it necessary to invest public resources in creating or promoting another online marketplace when existing platforms were already operating in this space?

By imagining Parliament House flying the eBid flag, Rose turns that question into a visual provocation. The national institution appears to endorse a commercial brand, blurring the boundaries between government responsibility, private enterprise and public expenditure.

The exaggerated lettering and bold colour give the composition a deliberately graphic, almost advertising-like quality. This visual language reinforces the tension at the heart of the work: the familiar symbols of government are placed alongside the branding and promotional language of online commerce.

Rather than dismissing the value of reuse or environmental sustainability, Flying eBid Flag asks how such initiatives should be delivered, what constitutes effective use of public money, and whether government-supported programs offer something meaningfully different from services already available.

Through satire and visual juxtaposition, the work invites viewers to consider the relationship between public purpose, commercial activity and accountability — and to ask when a well-intentioned initiative risks duplicating what the market already provides.
