Description

Spin explores the way politicians frame their agendas and shape public perception through language, presentation and persuasion. For Rose Marinelli, political messaging is rarely just about what is being said; it is also about how an issue is presented, which details are emphasised, and how the same set of circumstances can be made to support very different arguments.

At the centre of the work, vivid bands of red, yellow, green, blue and pink sweep inward in a continuous spiral. Set against a clean white background, the saturated colours create a sense of movement and depth, drawing the viewer into a vortex that appears to turn endlessly. The composition is energetic and visually playful, yet its relentless rotation suggests something less stable beneath the surface.

The spiral becomes a metaphor for political spin: the process of taking facts, policies or events and presenting them in a way that serves a particular agenda. An initiative can be framed as progress or failure, a compromise as a victory or a betrayal, depending on the language used and the perspective offered. Through selective emphasis, repetition and carefully constructed narratives, the same issue can be made to tell very different stories.

The circular movement also suggests how political messages can keep returning in slightly altered forms. Repeated often enough, a claim can begin to feel familiar, and familiarity can be mistaken for truth. As the colours turn and blend through the spiral, the distinction between information and interpretation becomes less certain, reflecting the difficulty of separating the underlying facts from the narrative built around them.

Rather than focusing on a particular politician or event, Spin examines a broader feature of political communication: the ability to frame an agenda to suit the moment, the audience or the desired outcome. The work invites viewers to look beyond the presentation, question the language being used and consider what may be emphasised, minimised or left unsaid.

Through its vivid colour and hypnotic movement, Spin asks a simple but important question: when a story can be turned in almost any direction, how do we recognise what is really at its centre?
