Description

Cutting Winds 2 continues Rose Marinelli’s exploration of unexplained adversity — those periods when life seems to go wrong from every direction, setbacks keep arriving, and their source remains unclear. Created as a second interpretation of the theme explored in Cutting Winds 1, the work reflects the experience of facing repeated difficulties without knowing why they are happening or how to stop them.

The artwork depicts a solitary figure leaning forward against a powerful incoming force. He grips an open umbrella, using it as his only protection against a stream of knives flying towards him. Their sharp white blades and brightly coloured handles cut across the muted landscape, creating a strong sense of movement and impending impact.

For Marinelli, the knives represent the unexpected problems, pressures and disappointments that can accumulate until life feels like a relentless struggle. Sometimes there is no single explanation for what is happening. Instead, one difficulty follows another, leaving little time to recover before the next arrives. The uncertainty can be as exhausting as the problems themselves.

The umbrella becomes a poignant symbol of limited protection. Designed to shield against the weather, it offers little defence against the sharp blades directed towards the figure. Yet he holds on to it, leaning into the force rather than abandoning his attempt to protect himself. The image captures the vulnerability of trying to manage circumstances that exceed the resources available to meet them.

The figure’s posture distinguishes this work from a scene of simple defeat. He is under pressure, but he has not given up. His forward movement suggests the effort required to keep going when retreat offers no obvious solution and the way ahead remains uncertain. There is no guarantee that his makeshift shield will be enough; the struggle lies in continuing despite that uncertainty.

The title, Cutting Winds 2, evokes the sensation of being struck by forces that cannot be seen or understood. Like a harsh wind cutting across an exposed landscape, adversity can arrive without warning, leaving its impact long before its cause becomes clear.

Through its textured surfaces, directional movement and stark contrast between the figure and the incoming knives, Marinelli gives visual form to the experience of feeling besieged by circumstances beyond one’s control. The work acknowledges the exhaustion of repeated setbacks while recognising the quiet persistence involved in facing each new challenge.

Together with Cutting Winds 1, this work considers resilience not as invulnerability, but as the determination to keep moving when protection is limited and the source of the storm remains unknown. Cutting Winds 2 is a reflection on endurance in the face of uncertainty — the struggle to hold on when life keeps throwing things your way.
