Description

Comfort Food 1 explores the relationship between food, emotional wellbeing and the ways we try to manage the demands of everyday life. Through expressive lines, warm earthy colours and an intimate composition, Rose Marinelli captures a quiet moment of eating, reflecting on how food can become a source of comfort when we are feeling low, exhausted or struggling to get through the day.

The composition centres on a woman with her eyes gently closed as she brings a spoon to her lips. Her expression suggests a moment of absorption, as though the outside world has briefly receded and her attention rests entirely on the experience before her. Bold outlines define her face and hand, while stylised strands of hair and textured blocks of brown, yellow and red give the image a distinctive graphic character. The close framing draws the viewer into this private moment, emphasising the simplicity and immediacy of the gesture.

The work has a personal significance for Marinelli. During periods of depression, she would turn to food for comfort. She also found herself eating in an effort to gain energy and keep going through the day, unaware at the time that she had undiagnosed sleep apnoea. What might appear to be an ordinary act of eating was connected to a more complex experience involving mood, fatigue and the effort to manage daily life.

Food can serve purposes beyond physical nourishment. It can offer temporary reassurance when emotions become difficult to manage, or provide a familiar pleasure when energy and motivation are in short supply. Particular tastes, textures and routines can become part of the ways we respond to what we are experiencing, sometimes without fully understanding the reasons behind our habits.

In Comfort Food 1, the act of eating becomes a moment of pause within the pressures of everyday life. The woman’s closed eyes suggest that she is absorbed in the immediate experience, finding something to focus on amid the distractions beyond the frame. The scene is quiet and unassuming, yet it touches on a familiar human impulse: seeking something that helps us feel a little better or gives us the strength to continue.

The artwork also reflects on how the reasons behind our behaviour are not always immediately apparent. At the time, Marinelli understood food as a way to cope with low mood and a lack of energy, without knowing that an underlying sleep condition was contributing to her fatigue. Looking back, the experience reveals how everyday habits can be shaped by circumstances we do not yet fully understand.

Marinelli’s warm palette reinforces the intimacy of the scene. Rich browns and yellows create a sense of warmth, while hints of red add depth and visual energy. The simplified forms and textured surfaces move the image away from strict realism, allowing the woman’s expression and gesture to carry the emotional weight of the work.

Comfort Food 1 invites viewers to consider the many roles food can play in our lives: nourishment, pleasure, reassurance and a way of coping when things feel difficult. Through a simple, intimate scene, Marinelli reflects on the relationship between physical and emotional needs, and on the small, everyday behaviours through which we try to find comfort and keep moving forward.
