Description
CEO Spotlight Stamps is a satirical reflection on corporate celebrity culture and the elevation of business leaders to public figures. Inspired by a period when the CEOs of Qantas and Australia Post seemed to be constantly in the news, the work explores how corporate executives can become familiar faces, attracting the kind of media attention more commonly associated with celebrities.
The artwork presents six stylised postage stamps arranged in a grid. Suited executive figures appear against carefully constructed backdrops of corporate and national imagery, while the bold “$1 MILLION” inscription draws attention to the relationship between executive status, financial reward and public recognition.
The postage stamp format is central to the work’s meaning. Traditionally used to commemorate significant people, events and achievements, stamps confer a sense of official recognition and lasting importance. Here, that visual language is applied to corporate executives whose prominence in the media may be intense, but whose celebrity status is tied to a particular moment in time.
Rather than depicting specific individuals, the figures represent a broader phenomenon: the way business leaders can become personalities in their own right, their opinions and appearances repeatedly circulated until their public image begins to overshadow the organisations they represent.
Through repetition, bold colour and the familiar language of postage, Rose Marinelli questions the relationship between media attention, wealth and perceived importance. CEO Spotlight Stamps invites viewers to consider who receives public recognition, why certain figures are elevated above others, and how quickly today’s celebrated executives can fade from the spotlight when the news cycle moves on.
