Description

Cake by the Ocean 2 brings together indulgence, escapism and the desire for a place to call home in a colourful, surreal composition. Inspired by DNCE’s song of the same name, Rose Marinelli transforms a playful still life into a visual exploration of pleasure, aspiration and the sometimes-unexpected meanings attached to everyday desires.

At the centre of the composition, a slice of cake topped with pink frosting and filled with red rests on a white plate beside a carefully rendered fork. A small flag bearing the image of a house is planted into the cake, introducing an unusual detail into the scene. Beyond the plate, a bright blue sky meets a turquoise ocean, while a distant sailboat and a soaring seagull suggest an idyllic setting of leisure and freedom.

The vivid colours and lively digital textures give the work an almost painterly energy. The cake becomes the immediate focus, its sweetness and rich colours suggesting pleasure and indulgence. Yet the house flag introduces a second idea: the aspiration for a home, a sense of belonging and the security associated with having a place of one’s own.

The contrast is deliberately playful. A slice of cake is a small, temporary pleasure, while a home represents something more enduring. By bringing these elements together, Marinelli creates a scene in which immediate gratification and long-term aspirations occupy the same space. The little house flag transforms an ordinary dessert into something more symbolic, suggesting how our desires can become intertwined with ideas about lifestyle, comfort and success.

The ocean setting adds another layer to the composition. Its bright, inviting colours evoke escape from everyday responsibilities, suggesting a world of leisure where time slows and familiar concerns seem distant. The sailboat and seagull reinforce this feeling of openness and possibility, while the cake remains an appealing, tangible pleasure in the foreground.

Inspired by the playful spirit of DNCE’s Cake by the Ocean 2, the artwork embraces humour and visual contradiction. The unlikely combination of dessert, domestic aspiration and coastal scenery encourages viewers to look beyond the surface and consider the different meanings that simple objects can carry. What initially appears to be a light-hearted image gradually reveals a more thoughtful relationship between enjoyment, desire and the things we hope to attain.

Marinelli’s use of saturated colour enhances this balance between playfulness and reflection. The pink frosting and red filling stand out against the cool blues and greens of the surrounding landscape, creating a lively contrast between the intimacy of the still life and the expansive setting beyond it.

Cake by the Ocean 2 invites viewers to consider the relationship between the pleasures we enjoy in the present and the aspirations that shape our lives. Through a surreal arrangement of familiar objects and an idyllic coastal backdrop, Marinelli creates an image that is both light-hearted and quietly reflective, reminding us that even the simplest pleasures can carry meanings beyond themselves.
