Description

Sweet Nothing explores the experience of searching for meaning and reassurance when life seems to offer little in return. Inspired by Calvin Harris and Florence Welch’s song of the same name, and its accompanying music video, the work reflects a period when emotional uncertainty and personal struggle created a longing for something solid to believe in.

The video’s portrayal of a couple caught in conflict resonated with Rose Marinelli, while the refrain “You’re giving me such sweet nothing” captured a deeper feeling: the sense that, despite longing for answers or comfort, the universe was giving nothing back. Promises, hopes and expectations seemed to lead nowhere, leaving an emotional emptiness that was difficult to resolve.

The artwork presents a figure suspended within a field of radiating colour and fragmented light. Layers of violet, magenta and electric blue expand around a darkened central form, creating an atmosphere that feels at once turbulent and transcendent. The figure’s upward-tilted face suggests a search for something beyond the immediate surroundings — an appeal for meaning, direction or relief.

For Marinelli, this search led towards religion. When the world felt unpredictable and the answers she needed seemed absent, faith offered something familiar to turn towards: a framework of belief in which to place her trust. It became a way of reaching for stability when other sources of reassurance felt uncertain or unavailable.

The contrast between the figure and the surrounding explosion of colour reflects the tension between inner vulnerability and the desire to find something greater than oneself. The fragmented forms suggest emotional upheaval, while the radiating light evokes the possibility of release, surrender or spiritual connection. The image does not resolve the uncertainty; instead, it captures the moment of reaching beyond it.

Music plays a central role in this work, providing a language for feelings that can be difficult to articulate directly. A song becomes more than a soundtrack to an experience: it becomes a point of recognition, allowing private emotions to find expression through sound, imagery and memory.

Sweet Nothing reflects on the human need to believe in something when the world seems to give so little back. It considers how people search for refuge in music, faith and other sources of meaning, and how belief can become an anchor when certainty is hard to find.
